PART 2 : Sarah didn’t sleep that night.

The boy—Daniel—lay curled up on her couch, exhausted, as if his entire life had led to this moment.

But for Sarah…

Everything was unraveling.

She sat across from him in silence, the photograph still clutched in her hand.

“You said your mother sent you,” she said gently.

Daniel nodded. “She told me to find you when it was time.”

“When what was time?”

He hesitated.

Then looked up.

“When they couldn’t hide me anymore.”

A chill ran through her.

“Who couldn’t?” Sarah asked.

Before he could answer—

A knock hit the door.

Sharp. Sudden. Wrong.

Sarah’s body went rigid.

Another knock.

Louder.

“Ms. Carter,” a man’s voice called from outside. “We need to speak with you.”

Her blood turned cold.

Daniel’s eyes widened in fear.

“They found me,” he whispered.

Sarah’s mind raced. Every instinct screamed the same thing—

This wasn’t over.

Not even close.

She stood slowly, her voice steady despite the storm inside her.

“You stay here,” she told him.

But Daniel grabbed her hand.

“No,” he said. “They’ll take me again.”

Again.

The word echoed like a gunshot.

Sarah looked at him—really looked.

The resemblance.

The truth.

The years stolen.

And in that moment, something inside her hardened.

No more running.

No more silence.

She walked to the door… and opened it.

Two men stood there. Clean suits. Cold eyes.

“We believe the child inside belongs to a classified recovery operation,” one of them said calmly.

Sarah didn’t even hesitate.

“He belongs to me.”

A pause.

Tension snapped tight between them.

“You don’t understand what you’re interfering with,” the man added.

Sarah stepped forward.

For the first time in years—she wasn’t the controlled, predictable woman of schedules and plans.

She was a mother.

“I understand exactly,” she said quietly.
“You lied to me.”

Behind her, Daniel held his breath.

And for the first time—

He wasn’t alone anymore.

The past had come back for them.

But this time—

Sarah wasn’t letting it win.
