“Ma’am, we need you to come with us.”
Maria looked like she couldn’t breathe.
Daisy wrapped both arms around her mother’s leg.
“No! She didn’t do it!”
Daniel Harper folded his arms and shook his head sadly.
“A shame,” he said softly.
“People surprise you.”
Maria looked at him.
Something about his face terrified her.
Then Daisy suddenly froze.
Her eyes dropped to the sketchbook still lying near the floor.
Because earlier that night…
She had been drawing.
Drawing while sitting beside the staircase.
Drawing everything she saw.
Her tiny hands started shaking.
“No way…”
She ripped open the sketchbook.
Page after page flipped by.
Flowers.
Cats.
Princesses.
And then—
One drawing.
A man in a navy suit.
Standing beside a cleaning cart.
Holding a sparkling bracelet.
Daisy had drawn it without thinking.
Because children sometimes draw what they notice.
She lifted the page high into the air.
“I DREW HIM!”
Everyone turned.
Silence.
Daniel’s face lost all color.
One officer grabbed the paper.
Principal Reynolds leaned closer.
Mrs. Whitmore stared with wide eyes.
Then the second officer spoke slowly:
“Sir…”
He looked at Daniel.
“We checked something after the cameras failed.”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“The parking lot cameras are on a separate system.”
Silence.
“We saw you.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Daniel suddenly ran.
But he only made it three steps before security tackled him onto the marble floor.
And while the adults stared in complete shock—
Daisy ran into her mother’s arms.
Maria dropped to her knees and held her tightly.
“You believed me,” Maria whispered through tears.
Daisy smiled.
“I always will.”
