Part 2 — The Truth They Buried

The street became silent.

The husband stared at the barefoot boy.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.

With shaking hands, he held it up.

The picture showed a younger version of the man standing beside a small farmhouse.

And in his arms was a baby.

The same baby from the locket.

The husband suddenly looked pale.

“Where did you get that?” he asked.

“My grandmother kept it,” the boy replied.

“She said the man paid money for one child and promised to come back for the other.”

The woman’s legs nearly gave out.

She turned toward her husband.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

The man lowered his eyes.

For years he had hidden the truth.

Before meeting his wife, he had discovered two abandoned twin boys living in extreme poverty.

Unable to afford both, he secretly arranged for one child to be adopted.

But when he returned days later, the second child was gone.

He searched for years.

And never found him.

Until now.

Tears streamed down the homeless boy’s face.

“You left me.”

The man dropped to his knees.

“No,” he whispered.

“I came back for you.”

The rich boy slowly walked toward his twin brother.

For the first time, the two boys stood face to face.

Neither spoke.

Then the rich boy removed his expensive jacket and placed it around his brother’s shoulders.

“You don’t have to be alone anymore.”

The homeless boy burst into tears.

The woman wrapped both boys in her arms.

As crowds watched, the family embraced in the middle of Fifth Avenue.

For the first time in eight years, the twins were together.

And this time, nobody was taking either of them away.
