PART 2 — The Secret They Buried

The man jumped out of the SUV.

The little girl gasped.

“No! Not him!”

She turned and ran.

The crowd scattered.

The wealthy woman grabbed the girl’s hand and pulled her behind her.

“Stay with me.”

The man stopped.

His face had gone white.

He recognized the woman immediately.

“Claire?”

The woman stared at him.

Then she recognized him too.

It was Michael.

The security guard working at the hospital the night her baby vanished.

The man she believed had died years ago.

“What do you want with her?” Claire demanded.

Michael’s eyes filled with guilt.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain!”

The little girl clung to Claire’s arm.

Michael lowered his head.

“The hospital fire wasn’t an accident.”

Claire’s heart stopped.

“What?”

“There was a child trafficking ring.”

The crowd listened in stunned silence.

“They paid people inside the hospital. Babies disappeared and were sold under new identities.”

Claire could barely breathe.

“My daughter…”

Michael nodded.

“She survived the fire.”

Tears streamed down Claire’s face.

“For sixteen years I’ve searched for her.”

Michael looked at the little girl.

“I couldn’t live with what happened. When I discovered where she was, I tried to protect her.”

The girl slowly removed the silver necklace.

Inside was a hidden photograph.

Claire opened it.

A picture of herself holding her newborn baby.

Her hands began to shake.

The girl looked into her eyes.

“Are you really my mother?”

Claire burst into tears.

“Yes.”

For a moment neither moved.

Then they ran into each other’s arms.

The crowd applauded.

But Michael wasn’t smiling.

He looked toward the SUV.

Someone else was sitting inside.

Watching.

A woman.

The woman slowly lowered her sunglasses.

And smiled.

“Sixteen years,” she whispered.

“They finally found each other.”

Then she started the engine and drove away.

Claire never saw her face.

But Michael did.

And the terror in his eyes revealed one final truth.

The woman who had stolen the baby sixteen years ago…

was still free.
