The crowd gasped.
Vanessa stared at the elderly man.
“What are you talking about?” she demanded.
The man ignored her.
Tears filled his eyes as he knelt before the homeless girl.
“Your name is Lily, isn’t it?”
The girl nodded.
The old man covered his mouth.
Three years earlier, his son and daughter-in-law had died in a tragic accident.
Their young daughter had disappeared during the chaos.
Despite massive searches, she was never found.
Everyone believed she was dead.
Everyone except him.
For three years he had searched.
And now she was standing in front of him.
Hungry.
Homeless.
Alone.
The old man hugged her tightly.
Reporters immediately turned their cameras away from Vanessa and toward the reunion.
But the scandal wasn’t over.
One of the journalists suddenly approached.
“Sir,” he said carefully, “isn’t your family the primary donor behind Vanessa Hart’s charity foundation?”
The man’s expression darkened.
“Yes.”
The reporter swallowed.
“Then you should know something.”
He handed over his phone.
The screen displayed security footage from moments earlier.
Vanessa taking the sandwich.
Vanessa posing.
Vanessa pulling it back.
The old man watched the entire video.
His face hardened.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“How much money have I donated to your foundation?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Twenty million dollars,” he answered himself.
The crowd murmured.
The old man looked furious.
“I gave that money to help children like Lily.”
Vanessa’s hands trembled.
The cameras were now aimed entirely at her.
“Effective immediately,” the old man announced, “my family is ending all support for your foundation.”
Gasps erupted.
“But that’s not all.”
He pointed toward the reporters.
“I want a full investigation into where every donated dollar went.”
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
Within hours, the story spread across the country.
The woman famous for her generosity had been exposed by a hungry child.
Months later, Vanessa’s foundation collapsed.
Meanwhile, Lily finally moved into her grandfather’s home.
One evening, while eating dinner at a table filled with food, she quietly placed half her sandwich on a plate.
Her grandfather smiled.
“You don’t have to save food anymore.”
Lily looked toward the empty chair beside her.
“For my brother,” she whispered.
The old man’s smile disappeared.
“Your brother?”
Lily nodded.
“He’s still out there.”
And suddenly, the search that had ended was about to begin again.
