Part 2 – The Debt of Honor

Daniel couldn’t move.

The ballroom disappeared around him.

The music.

The guests.

The cameras.

None of it mattered anymore.

Because twenty years earlier…

Scott had pulled Daniel from the burning wreckage of a military convoy overseas.

Daniel had survived.

Scott hadn’t.

Before dying, Scott had grabbed Daniel’s hand.

“If anything ever happens to my family…”

“…promise me you’ll find them.”

Daniel had sworn he would.

But after the war, Scott’s wife and young son disappeared without a trace.

For years Daniel searched.

Eventually everyone told him they were dead.

He forced himself to believe it.

Until tonight.

The little boy stepped back.

“My mom said you stopped looking.”

Every word felt like a knife.

Daniel lowered his head in shame.

“I failed him.”

The boy quietly shook his head.

“No.”

He reached into his torn jacket and pulled out an old military dog tag.

“My dad said… if I ever found you…”

“…give this back.”

Daniel recognized it instantly.

His hands began shaking uncontrollably.

Scott had carried that tag every single day.

Tears streamed down Daniel’s face.

He stood and turned toward the stunned crowd.

Then, in front of the wealthiest people in the city, he made the only announcement that mattered.

“This gala is over.”

Everyone stared.

Daniel placed one hand on the boy’s shoulder.

“From this moment on…”

“…Scott’s family is my family.”

The cameras flashed.

The guests applauded.

But Daniel barely heard them.

Because for the first time in twenty years…

He had finally begun to keep the promise he should never have broken.
