Inside the hidden compartment wasn’t money or jewelry.
It was a tiny handwritten note.
“If you’re reading this, then I couldn’t protect her anymore. Mia is your daughter.”
Victoria stumbled backward.
Twenty years earlier, everyone had told her that her newborn baby had died during childbirth after a devastating hospital fire.
She had spent decades mourning a child she never even held.
The note continued.
“They lied to both of us. They sold her. I spent seven years hiding her after I found the truth. Now they’re coming for us. Trust no one wearing the silver crest.”
Victoria slowly looked around the ballroom.
Half the guests—including members of her own foundation’s board—were wearing silver crest pins on their tuxedos and gowns.
One of the security guards quietly reached for his earpiece.
Victoria immediately pulled Mia behind her.
“Lock every door,” she ordered. “No one leaves.”
The guard smiled.
“That’s not going to happen.”
Before anyone could react, dozens of guests stood at the same time.
The charity gala had never been a celebration.
It had been a meeting.
And the little girl had just destroyed the secret they had buried for seven years.
