The woman stood up so suddenly the bench creaked loudly.
“No… that’s impossible…” she muttered, but her voice was breaking now.
The little girl didn’t move.
Instead, she slowly reached into her pocket… and pulled out a crumpled photo.
She held it up.
The man behind them stepped forward, eyes widening.
It was a younger version of the same elegant woman…
Standing next to a smiling young mother.
Wearing that exact ring.
The elderly woman’s hand started shaking uncontrollably.
“I… I didn’t—” she began, but stopped.
The girl’s voice cut through, quiet but sharp:
“My mom said you took everything from her.”
A long, suffocating silence.
People nearby had stopped walking.
Watching.
Listening.
The man whispered, almost to himself:
“…this was never lost… was it?”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears — but not of innocence.
Of guilt.
And just before she could say another word…
The little girl stepped back.
And ran.
