For the first time in decades, the most powerful man in the room looked completely helpless.
“How do you know that word?” he whispered.
The boy looked frightened.
“My sister doesn’t know many words,” he said. “But she always talks about a man in her dreams.”
Richard’s voice broke.
“What man?”
The boy reached into his sister’s tiny jacket pocket and pulled out an old silver pendant.
Richard stared at it.
His hands began shaking.
He knew that pendant.
Twenty years ago, he had given it to his wife before their daughter was born.
It had disappeared with the baby.
Richard whispered:
“Where did you get this?”
The boy answered quietly.
“An old woman gave it to us before she died. She told us to find a man named Richard Hale.”
Richard’s eyes filled with tears.
“Who was the old woman?”
The boy looked down.
“She was the woman who raised us.”
Richard closed his eyes.
For twenty years, he had believed his daughter was dead.
But now she was standing in front of him.
Hungry.
Cold.
And calling him Grandpa.
Richard slowly reached toward the little girl.
She didn’t pull away.
Instead, she placed her tiny hand in his.
Richard began crying.
“I looked for you…”
The boy suddenly interrupted.
“But she isn’t the person you’re looking for.”
Richard looked up.
“What do you mean?”
The boy pulled out an old photograph.
Richard took it.
His entire body froze.
The photograph showed his missing daughter as a baby—
being held by a young woman.
And on the back of the photograph were six handwritten words:
“Richard… your daughter is still alive.”
Richard looked at the boy.
“Then who is she?”
The boy slowly shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Suddenly, the bakery doors opened behind them.
An elegant woman walked inside.
Richard turned around.
His face went completely white.
Because he knew her.
It was the woman he had buried twenty years ago.
