The mother stared at the wealthy man.
“Buried it with who?” she asked.
He couldn’t answer.
His hands were shaking.
Slowly, he reached into his jacket and pulled out an old photograph.
The mother looked at it—
and nearly collapsed.
It was a photograph of her husband.
The same man who had disappeared seven years earlier.
“No…” she whispered. “Where did you get that?”
The wealthy man looked at the little girl, tears filling his eyes.
“Because your husband was my best friend.”
The mother’s face went pale.
“He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I had to protect his daughter.”
He looked at the necklace.
“But I was told he died that night.”
The little girl stepped closer.
“Then… why did Daddy tell me he would come back?”
The man knelt in front of her.
“Because he never died.”
The mother stopped breathing.
“What did you just say?”
The man pulled out his phone and showed her a photograph taken only three days earlier.
Her husband was standing in front of a hospital.
Alive.
Older.
But unmistakably him.
The mother covered her mouth as tears streamed down her face.
Then the wealthy man whispered:
“Your husband has been searching for you for seven years.”
The little girl began crying.
“Can we go see Daddy?”
The mother looked at the photograph…
and finally smiled through her tears.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“We’re going home.”
