Emily could barely breathe.
Robert’s face had completely lost its color.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” he whispered.
The woman gave a bitter smile.
“That’s what you paid everyone to believe.”
The boy suddenly ran toward her.
“Grandma!”
Emily stared at them both.
Robert stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.”
But the woman threw the folder onto the hotel table.
Inside were bank transfers, hospital records, and one signed agreement.
Emily recognized Robert’s signature immediately.
Eleven years earlier, Robert had secretly paid the boy’s mother to disappear.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
The final document showed that Emily’s own father had helped arrange everything.
Emily’s hands began shaking.
“My father knew?”
The older woman nodded.
“He didn’t just know. He chose you.”
Emily froze.
“Chose me for what?”
The woman slowly turned toward the boy.
“Because Robert never planned to marry you for love.”
Robert suddenly shouted:
“Enough!”
Everyone in the lobby turned.
The woman continued anyway.
“He married into your family because of the inheritance.”
Emily looked at Robert.
“What inheritance?”
The woman pulled out one last envelope.
On the front was written:
TO EMILY — OPEN ONLY IF ROBERT TRIES TO MARRY YOU.
Emily tore it open.
She read three lines.
Then looked at Robert with pure horror.
“You knew my mother was still alive?”
And from somewhere behind them, a woman’s voice answered:
“He knew because he’s the reason I disappeared.”
