Part 2 : The pounding became harder.

“Claire, unlock that door!” Vanessa shouted. “My mother is unstable!”

Margaret ignored her.

With trembling hands, she pressed play on the old recorder.

At first, there was only static.

Then a man’s voice filled the room.

Margaret’s late husband.

“If anything happens to me, Vanessa caused it.”

Claire froze.

The recording continued.

“She’s been moving money from our accounts for months. I confronted her tonight. She said if I changed the will, I’d regret it.”

A second voice appeared in the background.

Vanessa.

Cold. Calm.

“You should have left the money alone.”

Then came a crash.

A scream.

And silence.

Claire covered her mouth.

Outside the door, Vanessa suddenly stopped pounding.

For several seconds, the hallway was completely quiet.

Then she spoke softly.

“Mother… give me the recorder.”

Margaret stepped away from the door.

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice changed.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Margaret looked at Claire.

“Yes, I do.”

She opened the second folder from the drawer.

Inside was a newly signed trust amendment.

Claire read the first page and stared at her.

“You changed the beneficiary?”

Margaret nodded.

“Yesterday.”

“To who?”

Margaret pointed toward the hallway.

“To every resident she stole from.”

A violent crash shook the doorframe.

Vanessa screamed:

“You ruined everything!”

Margaret calmly reached for her phone.

“No, Vanessa.”

She pressed the call button.

“You did.”

Then Claire noticed something beneath the final bank statement.

A photograph of Vanessa standing beside the facility director.

On the back were three handwritten words:

HE HELPED HER.

Margaret looked toward the door.

“And she wasn’t working alone.”
