The entire ballroom turned toward the doorway.
The woman stood frozen, breathless and pale.
The little girl’s eyes widened.
“Mom?”
Alexander felt the ground disappear beneath him.
The woman slowly stepped forward, tears already streaming down her face.
“I never wanted this day to come,” she whispered.
Alexander stared at her.
Then recognition struck him.
Seventeen years earlier, she had worked at his estate.
And she had vanished the same night his infant daughter disappeared.
“You…” he said weakly.
The woman nodded.
“I took her.”
Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.
The little girl looked between them, terrified.
“What is she talking about?”
The woman dropped to her knees.
“Because she’s your daughter.”
The room fell silent.
Alexander’s knees nearly gave out.
“What?”
The woman sobbed.
“The night of the accident, everyone believed your baby died. But she didn’t. I found her alive.”
Alexander could barely breathe.
“Then why hide her from me?”
The woman looked down.
“Because your enemies were looking for her. The people responsible for your wife’s death wanted the child too.”
Tears streamed down Alexander’s face.
All these years.
All these birthdays.
All those nights wondering.
And she had been alive.
The little girl stood motionless.
“You’re… my father?”
Alexander slowly nodded.
Unable to speak.
The girl stared at him for several seconds.
Then ran into his arms.
Alexander held her tightly, as though letting go would make her disappear again.
Around them, the ballroom guests wiped away tears.
The same people who had laughed at her minutes earlier now watched in silence.
The woman who had mocked the child lowered her head in shame.
As father and daughter embraced, the little girl whispered something into Alexander’s ear.
Something that made him cry even harder.
“I only wanted enough food for my mom.”
Alexander smiled through his tears.
“You’ll never have to ask for food again.”
The chandeliers continued to glow above them.
But for Alexander, the brightest light in the room was the daughter he had finally found.
