The letter landed on the floor.
The restaurant owner picked it up before Daniel could reach it.
His hands trembled as he read the first lines aloud.
“My dearest Emily… If anyone ever finds these letters, they’ll know what really happened that night.”
The restaurant became deathly quiet.
Victoria stared at her husband in disbelief.
Daniel whispered, “It’s not what you think.”
The crying woman shook her head.
“It is exactly what they think.”
She explained that Emily had never written the letters.
Daniel had.
For ten years, he had secretly mailed letters to the woman because she was Emily’s younger sister. Every letter contained another piece of the truth he had been too afraid to confess.
The final envelope held something else.
A small engagement ring.
And one handwritten note.
“Emily survived that night… but she knew no one would believe her. She asked me to disappear from everyone’s life forever.”
The restaurant gasped.
Victoria looked at Daniel with tears in her eyes.
“So… you lied to everyone?”
Daniel nodded.
“I wasn’t hiding a murder.”
He closed his eyes.
“I was hiding the fact that she chose to disappear… and I promised I’d never tell anyone where she went.”
The room fell silent.
The mystery had been solved—but the marriage was already over.
