Ethan opened it with trembling hands.
His name was listed under “Father.”
But that wasn’t what made him stop breathing.
At the bottom was another signature.
Claire’s.
The document showed that six years earlier, Claire had personally authorized the child’s mother to be transferred under a false name.
“Explain this,” Ethan said.
Claire stared at the paper.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then the little girl pulled out a tiny voice recorder.
“My mom told me to give you this if anything happened to her.”
Claire suddenly lunged forward.
“Give me that!”
Ethan stepped between them and pressed PLAY.
A weak woman’s voice filled the silent lobby:
“Ethan… if you’re hearing this, Claire finally found me. She told me you abandoned us, but I know now she intercepted every letter I sent you.”
Ethan’s face went completely blank.
Claire whispered:
“You don’t understand.”
The recording continued:
“And Ethan… your daughter isn’t the only child you have.”
Everyone froze.
The woman’s voice broke into tears.
“There’s another one.”
Ethan stared at Claire.
“Another child?”
Claire began crying.
Then the hotel elevator opened behind them.
A teenage boy stepped out holding the exact same photograph.
He looked directly at Ethan and said:
“Dad… she told me you were dead.”
