I recognized the tiny scratch near the diamond immediately.
My knees nearly gave out.
The detective looked at Vanessa.
“We also found prescription medication registered to Claire Bennett and a keycard from a private rehabilitation facility outside the city.”
Vanessa suddenly tried to leave.
Two officers blocked the door.
I shouted:
“Is Claire there?”
The detective hesitated.
“She was.”
My stomach dropped.
“Was?”
He handed me a photograph taken from security footage only hours earlier.
Claire was alive.
Weak, frightened… but alive.
And standing beside her was someone I never expected to see.
My own brother, Michael.
I stared at the picture.
“Why is my brother there?”
Vanessa started crying.
“Because this was never supposed to go this far.”
I turned toward her.
“What did you do?”
She finally broke.
“Claire discovered Michael was stealing money from your company. She threatened to expose him. He staged the accident, and I helped hide her.”
The room erupted.
But then the detective interrupted her.
“That’s not the worst part.”
He showed me another photo.
Claire wasn’t alone in the facility.
A little boy was sitting beside her.
Maybe four years old.
He had my eyes.
I stared at the detective.
“Who is that child?”
Before he could answer, Lily whispered behind me:
“Dad… Mom told me I have a little brother.”
Vanessa screamed:
“She was never supposed to tell you!”
And that was when I realized the wedding, the accident, the missing money…
None of it was the real secret.
The real secret was why my wife had been kept alive for two years — and who that little boy really belonged to.
