Daniel had practiced becoming a father for months.

He learned how to fold the stroller, installed the car seat three times, and carried an imaginary baby around the kitchen while his wife, Grace, laughed from the doorway.

But when the nurse finally placed their daughter in his arms, every word he had prepared disappeared.A dark birthmark covered much of the left side of her face, stretching from her forehead across her cheek.

Daniel stared.

Then, barely above a whisper, he said, “It’s bad.”

Grace heard him.

She reached for her baby immediately.

“Give her to me.”

“Grace, I didn’t—”

“Give me my daughter.”

The room fell quiet except for the small, furious cries of a newborn who wanted to be held.

Grace pressed the baby against her chest.

“Hello, Sophie,” she whispered. “We’ve been waiting for you.”

That night, Daniel sat beside the hospital bed long after Grace fell asleep. Sophie lay awake in her bassinet, opening and closing one tiny hand.

He offered her his finger.

She gripped it.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

He had been frightened by something he didn’t understand. But the words he had chosen had hurt his wife, and someday, he realized, words like those could hurt his daughter.

He couldn’t take them back.

He could decide
