My fiancé pressured me to place my 5-year-old twin brothers in foster care after I became their guardian—so I devised a lesson he would never forget.

Derek and I had been together since high school. After college, he proposed on my parents’ back porch while my little brothers, Eli and Finn, secretly watched through the kitchen window.

At 22, I thought my future was perfect.

Then 1 phone call destroyed everything.

A police officer told me that my parents had died in a car accident. Eli and Finn had been in the car with them and were seriously injured.

Thankfully, they survived.

My parents had named me as the twins’ preferred guardian in their will, and I agreed without hesitation. I adored my brothers. After losing our parents, there was no chance I would abandon them.

So at 22, I suddenly became their guardian—and the only parent they had left.

My heart was shattered, but Derek promised we would face everything together.

At first, he brought groceries, helped with paperwork, and acted supportive. But once he realized the twins would be living with me permanently, his attitude changed.

One evening, he came into the kitchen and asked, “This guardianship arrangement is only temporary, right?”

I stared at him. “What do you mean?”

“You’re eventually going to find somewhere else for them to live.”

“They’re 5 years old, Derek. They just lost both their parents.”

“I understand that, but I’m not raising someone else’s children.”

“They aren’t strangers. They’re my brothers, and they’re staying with me until they’re grown.”

His expression hardened.

“Then put them in foster care, or the wedding is off. I’m not sacrificing the next 13 years of my life for them.”

I couldn’t believe the man I had loved since high school was standing in front of me, demanding that I send 2 grieving children away.

“But they have no one else,” I said. “My parents are gone. Eli, Finn, and I only have each other now.”

“That isn’t my problem,” he snapped. “We were supposed to travel, buy a house, and eventually have children of our own. I’m not throwing away our future because of someone else’s kids.”

“They’re my family.”

Derek folded his arms.

“Then choose. You can raise them, or you can marry me. You can’t have both.”

I was furious. Every part of me wanted to tell him exactly what I thought of him and throw him out.

But simply ending the argument wouldn’t be enough.

Derek needed to understand exactly what his ultimatum had cost him.My fiancé pressured me to place my 5-year-old twin brothers in foster care after I became their guardian—so I devised a lesson he would never forget.
