PART 2 ։ When the lights came back on, my mother was gone.

I ran through the ballroom searching for her.

Finally, I found her outside on the hotel terrace, crying beneath the warm evening lights.

“Mom… please. Tell me the truth.”

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she finally spoke.

“Your father didn’t die.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He left us twenty-nine years ago,” she whispered. “He wanted nothing to do with you.”

I felt tears running down my face.

“Then why did you tell me he was dead?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

My mother pulled another photograph from her handbag.

This time, it showed my father standing beside my mother-in-law.

My entire body went cold.

“They knew each other?” I whispered.

My mother nodded.

“Your father was involved with her family. When he discovered what they had done… he threatened to expose them.”

I could barely breathe.

“What did they do?”

My mother looked toward the ballroom.

“They tried to take you away from me.”

She explained that when I was only three months old, my father had signed documents claiming he was giving up his parental rights. But the documents were forged.

My mother had spent years protecting me from the truth.

Then she handed me one final envelope.

Inside was a birth certificate.

I looked at the name listed under Father.

My tears stopped.

Because it wasn’t the name of the man in the photograph.

I looked at my mother.

“Mom… who is my real father?”

She squeezed my hand.

And before she could answer, a man’s voice came from behind us.

“It’s me.”

I slowly turned around.

A gray-haired man stood beneath the terrace lights.

I knew that face.

I’d seen it every day in the photograph.

My mother began crying.

The man looked at me and whispered:

“I’ve been searching for you for twenty-nine years.”

But then he said the words that changed everything:

“Your mother didn’t steal you from me…”

He looked toward the ballroom.

“She saved you from me.”
