Part 2 ” Daniel could barely say her name.

The woman stepped inside.

She looked older, thinner, and terrified—but it was unmistakably her.

Vanessa backed away from the altar.

Daniel stared at Emma as if the entire world had stopped.

“I buried you.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“No. You buried an empty coffin.”

Gasps spread through the church.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel, she’s manipulating you.”

Emma suddenly laughed bitterly.

“Then ask her where she was the night of my accident.”

Vanessa froze.

Emma walked toward the altar.

“Twelve years ago, Vanessa discovered I was pregnant.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Sophie grabbed Emma’s hand.

Emma continued.

“She offered me money to leave you. I refused.”

Daniel looked from Emma to Sophie.

Then he understood.

His knees nearly gave way.

“Sophie…?”

Emma nodded.

“She’s your daughter.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Vanessa suddenly shouted:

“She chose to disappear!”

Emma turned toward her.

“You cut my brake line.”

The room exploded with shocked whispers.

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

But Emma wasn’t finished.

“I survived the crash. And when I woke up, Vanessa told me you wanted nothing to do with me.”

Daniel whispered:

“That’s a lie.”

“I know that now.”

Emma pulled an envelope from her coat.

“These are the messages she sent from your phone.”

Daniel opened it.

Dozens of printed messages.

Cruel.

Cold.

Every one supposedly written by him.

Vanessa began walking backward.

Daniel looked at her.

“You stole twelve years from me.”

Then Sophie suddenly pointed toward the church entrance.

“Mom… that’s the man.”

A gray-haired man in a dark suit had appeared in the doorway.

Emma’s face turned white.

Daniel looked at her.

“Who is he?”

Emma whispered:

“The man Vanessa paid to make sure I never came back.”

The stranger smiled.

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

“You still don’t know the worst part.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“What could possibly be worse?”

The man glanced at Vanessa—

then at Sophie.
