Part 2 : Daniel slammed the SUV into park and jumped out.

“Lena, please. I can explain.”

“EXPLAIN WHAT?” I screamed. “Why is that little girl calling me Mom?”

His face went white.

Before he could answer, my father spoke from behind me.

“Don’t believe a word he says.”

I turned toward Dad.

Daniel stared at him.

“Frank, stay out of this.”

Dad’s hands tightened around the wheelchair.

“You’ve lied to her long enough.”

My stomach twisted.

“Dad… what are you talking about?”

Then the little girl opened the SUV door.

Daniel shouted, “Emily! Stay in the car!”

Emily.

My daughter’s middle name.

The girl ran straight toward me and wrapped both arms around my waist.

“You came back,” she sobbed.

I froze.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart… I don’t know you.”

She looked up at me, completely confused.

“Yes, you do. Daddy shows me your pictures every night.”

I slowly looked at Daniel.

“What pictures?”

He said nothing.

Then my father whispered:

“Lena… your daughter never died.”

Everything around me seemed to disappear.

“What?”

Daniel snapped, “Frank!”

But Dad kept talking.

“The hospital told you she died because Daniel paid someone to make sure you believed it.”

I felt my knees weaken.

“You knew?”

Dad couldn’t look at me.

That silence gave me the answer.

My own father had known.

For two years.

I stepped away from him.

“You let me visit an empty grave?”

Tears filled his eyes.

“He threatened to destroy our entire family.”

Daniel suddenly moved toward me.

“Lena, get in the car. Now.”

But the blond boy who had saved my father stepped between us.

“No.”

Daniel froze.

The boy pulled a phone from his pocket.

“I recorded you.”

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

“What did you record?”

The boy pressed PLAY.

Daniel’s own voice came through the speaker:

“If Lena sees the girl today, make sure her father doesn’t leave this parking lot alive.”

Nobody moved.

I looked at the crushed shopping cart.

Then at my father.

Then at my husband.

And finally I understood.

The SUV hadn’t been reversing by accident.
