She wasn’t.
Her name was Lily. She was six years old, and she had a photograph in her pocket of my father holding her on his shoulders.
On the back, in his handwriting, were the words:
“My little girl. Forgive me for keeping you a secret.”
My mother went completely pale.
Then Lily’s mother walked into the church.
I recognized her immediately.
She was my mother’s younger sister.
The room went silent.
My aunt admitted that she and my father had been secretly seeing each other for years. Lily was their daughter.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
My mother suddenly screamed, “Tell them why he was paying you every month!”
My aunt started crying.
Then she handed me an envelope my father had given her the night before he died.
Inside were DNA results.
I looked at the first page and felt my knees weaken.
Lily wasn’t the only family secret.
According to the report, the man I had called “Dad” my entire life… wasn’t my biological father.
I turned toward my mother.
She whispered, “Please… not here.”
But my aunt looked straight at me and said:
“You deserve to know who your real father is.”
Then she pointed toward one of the men standing beside the coffin.
And when I saw who it was, I finally understood why my father had taken that secret to his grave.
