“How?”
The girl reached into the pocket of her worn blue coat and pulled out a tiny, faded photograph.
Mara’s heart stopped.
It showed a young man standing beside a woman.
Her son.
And in his arms was a newborn baby.
On the back of the photograph, written in faded handwriting, were four words:
“My little Lily. Forever.”
Mara covered her mouth.
“Lily…”
The girl looked up at her.
“That’s my name.”
Daniel took the photograph with trembling hands.
His eyes filled with tears.
“But… Dad told us the baby died.”
Mara shook her head.
“He lied.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Why?”
Mara finally broke down.
“Because your father wanted me to believe she was gone.”
She looked at Lily.
“Twenty years ago, your father took your brother’s newborn daughter away. He told everyone she had died.”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“You mean… she’s my niece?”
Mara nodded through her tears.
“She’s family.”
Lily stepped forward.
“Does that mean… I finally have a home?”
Daniel immediately knelt and opened his arms.
“You do now.”
Lily ran into him, crying.
Mara watched them embrace, clutching the two halves of the moon pendant.
For twenty years, she had believed that broken moon represented everything her family had lost.
But now she understood.
It had never represented the end.
It had been a promise.
A promise that one day…
they would find each other again.
And for the first time in twenty years, Mara smiled through her tears.
