The girl looked about seven years old.
Same dark eyes as my daughter Sophie.
Same crooked smile.
Even the tiny dimple beside her mouth was identical.
“Who is this?” I whispered.
Daniel said nothing.
His mother answered for him.
“His daughter.”
I felt my stomach drop.
Daniel and I had been together for eleven years.
He had never once mentioned having another child.
I stared at him.
“Where is she?”
That was when Daniel finally began to cry.
He told me his first wife, Rachel, had disappeared with their daughter after their marriage collapsed.
For years, he claimed he had searched for them.
Then, according to him, Rachel contacted him shortly before he met me and demanded that he never come near them again.
I almost believed him.
Until his mother interrupted.
“That’s another lie.”
She pulled an envelope from her purse.
Inside were bank statements.
Daniel had been sending money to Rachel every single month.
For eleven years.
Even worse, the most recent payment had been sent three days earlier.
I looked at him.
“So you knew where they were the entire time?”
Daniel covered his face.
Then his phone lit up on the table.
A message appeared on the screen.
From someone saved as RACHEL.
I read the preview before he could grab the phone.
“Sophie is asking why her sister can’t come to the party.”
I looked toward my eight-year-old daughter across the room.
“Sister?”
Daniel froze.
His mother whispered:
“Now you understand why the girls look alike.”
And that was when Daniel finally admitted the truth.
The girl in the photograph wasn’t just his daughter.
She and Sophie had the same father.
And their mothers had been pregnant at the same time.
For eight years, Daniel had been living two separate family lives—
and both women believed they were the only one.
