“Please… not here.”
But Elena snatched the photograph from the little girl’s hand.
On the back was a date.
Six years earlier.
Exactly three months after Mark had supposedly met Elena for the first time.
Elena looked at the child.
“Where is your mother?”
The girl’s lips began trembling.
“In the hospital.”
Mark closed his eyes.
And then his mother said the sentence that made half the guests gasp.
“Elena, that woman isn’t his ex-girlfriend.”
Elena slowly turned toward her.
“Then who is she?”
His mother swallowed hard.
“She’s his wife.”
A champagne glass shattered somewhere behind them.
Elena stared at Mark.
“You told me you’d never been married.”
Mark whispered:
“I thought she was dead.”
The little girl suddenly shook her head.
“No. Daddy knew.”
Mark froze.
The child reached into her coat and pulled out a second photograph.
This one had been taken only two weeks earlier.
Mark was standing outside the hospital.
Holding her mother’s hand.
And written across the bottom were five words:
“PLEASE DON’T TELL MY FIANCÉE.”
Elena looked from the photograph to the man she had almost married.
Then she removed her wedding ring.
But before she could throw it at him, the little girl looked up at her and whispered:
“There’s something else you need to know.”
Elena bent down.
The girl pointed toward the back of the ballroom.
“My mom is here.”
Every guest turned.
A woman in a hospital gown was standing in the doorway.
But she wasn’t looking at Mark.
She was staring directly at Elena’s father.
Then she whispered:
“You never told your daughter that Mark is her brother?”
Elena’s wedding ring slipped from her fingers.
And suddenly, the entire wedding had a much darker secret than anyone imagined.
