The clock struck midnight.
Inside the ballroom, Adrian raised a glass.
“To the future of Vale Urban Group.”
Guests cheered.
Board members applauded.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
And I walked in.
Still wearing the wet silver dress.
Still smiling.
“Actually,” I said loudly, “before we discuss the future, let’s discuss the crimes.”
Silence.
Every conversation stopped.
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Evelyn, what are you doing?”
I walked to the giant projection screen behind him.
“Showing everyone who you really are.”
I inserted the flash drive.
The first email appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
The room exploded with whispers.
Vanessa turned pale.
Celeste nearly dropped her champagne glass.
Adrian rushed toward the stage.
“You hacked company records!”
“No,” I said. “I accessed my company records.”
His confidence cracked.
For the first time all night, I saw fear.
The board chairman stood.
“Adrian… what is this?”
“Forgery,” Adrian snapped. “She’s manipulating documents.”
“Am I?”
I pressed another button.
The screen displayed the forged medical reports.
Then the transfer orders.
Then recorded audio from a finance meeting Daniel had secretly captured.
Adrian’s own voice filled the ballroom.
‘Once she’s declared incompetent, the shares become irrelevant.’
Gasps echoed through the room.
Vanessa backed away from him.
Celeste sat down heavily.
The chairman looked sick.
“This is enough to trigger a criminal investigation.”
Adrian turned toward me.
“You planned this?”
“No,” I answered. “You did.”
Then I removed a folded document from my purse.
“My father anticipated betrayal. Fifteen years ago, he created a Founder Protection Clause.”
Several board members frowned.
One elderly director suddenly stood.
“Oh my God.”
He remembered.
The clause had never been activated.
Until now.
I handed the document to the company’s attorney.
After reviewing it, she looked directly at Adrian.
“Effective immediately, Evelyn Vale assumes temporary controlling authority over all corporate assets and board decisions.”
The room erupted.
Adrian stared at me in disbelief.
“You can’t do that.”
“I just did.”
Security entered minutes later.
Not for me.
For him.
As officers escorted Adrian away for questioning, he looked back one final time.
“You’ll regret this.”
I shook my head.
“No. You will.”
Hours later, dawn painted the city gold.
The party was over.
The empire was still standing.
And for the first time in years, it belonged to the person who had built it.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
They arrested Vanessa too.
I smiled.
Then another message arrived from the company attorney.
One more thing. Your father left a sealed letter to be opened only if the Founder Protection Clause was activated.
My heartbeat quickened.
I opened the attached file.
Inside was a single sentence.
Evelyn, if you’re reading this, the betrayal came from someone closer than Adrian. Trust no one until you find the second name.
Beneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph taken twenty years ago.
And standing beside my father…
Was Daniel Ruiz.
