I pulled my wrist away from Daniel.
“Don’t touch me.”
The entire restaurant had gone silent.
Then I tore the envelope open.
Inside were three things:
A birth certificate.
A hospital bracelet.
And a handwritten letter addressed to me.
My eyes immediately went to the birth certificate.
The little boy’s name was Lucas Bennett.
Mother: Sarah Bennett.
Father:
Daniel Carter.
I looked at my husband.
“How long?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with panic.
“Emily, I can explain.”
“HOW LONG?”
“Nine years.”
My knees almost gave out.
Nine years.
We had been married for eleven.
Sarah hadn’t died before the affair.
She had disappeared after it.
Lucas suddenly grabbed my sleeve.
“Please read Mom’s letter.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.”
I opened it anyway.
Emily,
If Lucas has reached you, then Daniel finally knows I survived.
I stopped reading.
“Survived what?”
Daniel whispered my name.
But Lucas answered first.
“The accident.”
I stared at him.
“What accident?”
He pulled a second photograph from his jacket.
It showed Sarah standing beside a badly damaged car.
And behind her—
Daniel.
My husband looked like he was about to collapse.
Lucas pointed at the photograph.
“Mom said your husband was there the night everyone thought she died.”
I turned slowly toward Daniel.
“You told me police found her car in the river.”
“They did.”
“Then why is she alive?”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Because Sarah wasn’t the person inside the car.”
My blood went cold.
“Who was?”
Daniel looked across the table at my mother-in-law.
For the first time all evening, she stopped smiling.
Then she quietly said:
“Daniel. Don’t say another word.”
I stared at her.
“What did you do?”
She stood, grabbed her purse and headed for the door.
But Lucas shouted:
“WAIT!”
Everyone froze.
He pulled one final photograph from the envelope.
I looked at it—
and nearly dropped it.
Sarah wasn’t alone.
She was holding a newborn baby.
A little girl.
On the back, someone had written:
Emily’s daughter — 2017.
I couldn’t breathe.
“I never had a daughter.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
My mother-in-law whispered:
“Yes, Emily… you did.”
And that was when I realized the affair wasn’t the secret they had been hiding from me.
My own child was.
