But the doors wouldn’t open.
Electronic locks slammed shut automatically.
People began crying.
The boy never moved.
Inside the vault, a second hidden steel door was now opening deep underground.
Slowly.
Violently.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
The bank director grabbed the boy’s arm.
DIRECTOR:
“You don’t understand what’s down there!”
The boy pulled away calmly.
BOY:
“No. You’re scared I DO understand.”
The Vault Man stepped closer to them.
His face no longer looked weak.
It looked angry.
VAULT MAN:
“You told the world I stole the money.”
The director shook violently.
DIRECTOR:
“You were supposed to disappear!”
The guests nearby gasped.
The boy looked at the director.
BOY:
“So my father was innocent…”
Before the director could answer—
BOOOOOOM.
The lower vault door burst fully open underground.
All lights in the ballroom died instantly.
Darkness.
Screaming.
Then heavy footsteps echoed upward from below.
THUD.
THUD.
THUD.
Emergency red lights flickered back on.
And suddenly everyone saw it—
A gigantic underground chamber hidden beneath the bank.
Stacks of gold.
Old government files.
Secret photographs.
And in the center of the chamber…
a massive glass container.
Something was trapped inside it.
Something HUMAN.
The trapped figure slowly opened its eyes.
The boy whispered:
BOY:
“…Mom?”
