Daniel couldn’t move.
For seven years he had imagined this moment.
He had imagined screaming at Elena.
Asking why she abandoned him.
Asking why she disappeared without a word.

He couldn’t speak.
Elena looked thinner.

“What did you do?”
Vanessa started shaking.
“I did it for us.”

Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
Vanessa wiped tears from her face.
“When Elena was pregnant, she got into an accident. She lost her memory for months.” Her voice cracked. “When I found out… I told her you moved away.”
Daniel’s face lost all color.

Vanessa kept crying.
“I loved you! I knew if she came back, I’d lose you!”
Gasps spread through the guests.
Daniel felt sick.

Seven years of birthdays.
Seven years of first words.
Seven years of missing his son.

Elena looked at Daniel with tears streaming down her face.
“I searched for you after my memory came back,” she whispered. “I never stopped.”
