The ballroom was completely silent.
Isabella stared at her mother in horror.
“What are you talking about?” she whispered.
The old woman stepped forward, tears streaming down her face.
“You didn’t abandon him.”
The crowd looked confused.
The homeless boy stopped crying.
Then the old woman revealed the truth.
Twenty years earlier, Isabella had given birth at seventeen.
Their wealthy family feared scandal.
To protect their reputation, Isabella’s father secretly paid people to take the baby away while Isabella was unconscious after childbirth.
For twenty years, she believed her son had died.
The ballroom erupted.
