Snow swirled around the building as Howard stepped out first.
Emily followed, clutching Lily tightly.
Inside, Howard slammed a thick folder onto the detective’s desk.
“I want financial crimes here. Now.”
Emily stared at him in confusion.
“What is this?”
Howard looked at her carefully.
“Everything your parents stole from you.”
Emily’s stomach dropped.
The detective opened the folder.
Bank transfers.
Property records.
Trust accounts.
Insurance documents.
Every page carried Emily’s name.
The detective looked stunned.
“Sir… this is millions of dollars.”
Emily almost laughed from shock.
“Millions? I can’t even buy diapers.”
Howard’s face hardened.
“You were never supposed to be poor.”
Emily felt dizzy.
Howard explained everything.
Years ago, he created a private inheritance fund for Emily after her grandmother died. The money was meant to protect her future and her children’s future.
But after Howard suffered a heart attack last year, Caroline gained temporary control over parts of the family finances.
And she emptied everything.
Emily’s mother had told everyone Howard was becoming senile.
That he forgot things.
That Emily was unstable.
Nobody questioned it.
Nobody except Howard.
Because three days earlier, he discovered something impossible:
Emily’s inheritance had been transferred into Caroline’s accounts.
And the luxury mansion Caroline recently bought?
Paid for with Emily’s money.
Emily covered her mouth in horror.
“My own mother…”
Before Howard could answer, the police station doors burst open.
Caroline stormed inside wearing a white fur coat.
Her mascara was smeared from crying.
“You don’t understand!” she screamed.
Howard stood slowly.
“Then explain it.”
Caroline pointed at Emily violently.
“She ruined this family! She married that worthless man! She would’ve wasted everything anyway!”
Emily felt tears running down her face.
“You stole from your granddaughter,” Howard said coldly.
Caroline’s voice cracked.
“I did it for us!”
Howard looked at her with complete disappointment.
“No,” he said quietly.
“You did it because you were jealous she was loved more than you.”
The entire room fell silent.
Then came the sound nobody expected.
Handcuffs clicking shut.
Caroline collapsed screaming as officers arrested her.
Emily stood frozen, holding Lily.
Howard walked toward them slowly.
Then he gently touched Lily’s tiny hand.
“No Bennett child,” he whispered, “will ever suffer like this again.”
Emily finally broke down crying in her grandfather’s arms.
But as detectives carried Caroline away…
She turned back toward Emily with hatred burning in her eyes.
And screamed one final sentence:
“You still don’t know what your husband did!”
Emily’s tears stopped instantly.
Howard’s expression changed.
Because whatever secret Caroline knew…
It was worse than theft.
THE END… OR MAYBE NOT.
