No one spoke.
Daniel slowly reached for his mother’s handbag.
“Don’t touch that!” she shouted.
Too late.
He pulled out the folded DNA report.
His hands trembled as he read the first page.
His eyes widened.
“This isn’t Emma’s report…”
The young nurse nodded.
“No, sir.”
“It’s your mother’s.”
Emma looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
The nurse hesitated before answering.
“It means someone switched the files.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
“You stole medical records?”
She backed away.
“I was only protecting you!”
“From what?”
“From her!” she screamed, pointing at Emma.
“I knew if you believed she cheated, you’d leave her.”
Emma’s face filled with tears.
“You tried to destroy our family…”
Daniel looked down at his sleeping daughter.
Then back at his mother.
“You lied to me.”
“You made me doubt my wife.”
“You almost made me lose my family.”
His mother reached for him.
“Daniel, please…”
He stepped back.
“No.”
“You don’t get to call yourself this baby’s grandmother anymore.”
Security entered the room moments later.
As they escorted her away, she kept shouting that she had done it out of love.
The room finally fell silent.
Daniel knelt beside Emma’s bed.
“I’m so sorry.”
Emma looked into his eyes.
“Don’t ever let anyone come between us again.”
He gently kissed her forehead as they both looked down at their newborn daughter.
For the first time in months…
Their family finally felt whole.
