Part 2 — The Truth Sophia Hid

Emma pulled the boy behind her just as one of the men lunged forward.

“Stay away from him!” she shouted.

Without thinking, she ran.

They darted through crowded streets, slipped into a narrow alley, and hid behind stacked delivery crates. The SUV roared past without seeing them.

The boy was shaking uncontrollably.

“My name is Noah,” he whispered.

Emma wrapped her coat around him.

“Who are those men?”

“They’ve been chasing us for months.”

“And your mother?”

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“They took her.”

Emma felt her chest tighten.

Before she could speak, Noah reached into his pocket once more.

This time, he handed her a small silver key.

“Mom said you’d know where it belongs.”

Emma stared at it.

She recognized it immediately.

It opened the safety deposit box their father had secretly rented years before Sophia disappeared.

The next morning, Emma and Noah entered the bank together.

Inside the box was a single envelope addressed to Emma.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Emma,

If you’re reading this, I couldn’t protect Noah anymore. Everything they told you about me was a lie. I never abandoned our family. I was hiding from people who would do anything to silence me. Noah is your nephew. Please keep him safe. Trust no one… especially someone you already know.

Emma’s breathing stopped.

A business card slipped from the envelope.

On it was the name of the person leading the organization that had hunted Sophia for eleven years.

Emma stared at the card in horror.

It belonged to her own fiancé.

The office door slowly creaked open behind them.

“Emma…”

It was his voice.

She turned around—

—and realized he had known the truth all along.
