The wedding guests sat in stunned silence.
I could barely breathe.
“My daughter…” I whispered. “She’s alive?”
The elderly woman nodded.
Tears streamed down her face.
“Yes.”
I turned toward Ethan.
His eyes were filled with guilt.
“You knew?”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
The world tilted beneath me.
For six years I had believed my baby died during delivery.
I had visited an empty grave.
I had spent countless nights crying myself to sleep.
And now they were telling me she was alive.
“Where is she?” I demanded.
No one answered.
“WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?”
Finally Ethan pointed toward the front row.
A little girl with long dark hair stood beside Ethan’s mother.
She couldn’t have been older than six.
She looked exactly like me.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same dimple on her left cheek.
My knees nearly gave out.
The little girl stared at me curiously.
“Mommy?”
The single word shattered me.
I ran toward her.
We hugged as tears poured down both our faces.
Around us, guests openly cried.
But the reunion didn’t last long.
Police officers suddenly entered the hall.
The lead detective walked directly toward Ethan’s father.
“Richard Hayes,” he announced. “You are under arrest for kidnapping, fraud, and falsifying medical records.”
The guests gasped.
Richard attempted to run.
He made it three steps before officers tackled him to the ground.
As they handcuffed him, he looked at me with pure hatred.
“You ruined everything.”
I held my daughter tighter.
“No,” I replied.
“You did.”
Six months later, Ethan testified against his father.
The truth came out.
Richard had separated us because he believed I wasn’t good enough for his wealthy family.
He paid doctors to fake my baby’s death and secretly raised my daughter as his own granddaughter.
But his lies finally collapsed.
The wedding was canceled.
The empire he spent decades building disappeared.
And for the first time in six years, my daughter fell asleep in my arms.
That night, as I tucked her into bed, she smiled and whispered:
“Goodnight, Mommy.”
And suddenly, every lost year felt like the beginning of a new life.
