Part2 : Melissa nearly dropped the phone.

Daniel Carter had been buried seven years earlier.

She had stood beside Ryan at the funeral.

She had watched the coffin lowered.

She had held Ryan while he cried.

And now his father was speaking to her.

“Where are you?”

Daniel ignored the question.

“Ryan made a mess.”

Melissa stared at her husband.

Ryan looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

That told her everything.

“You knew he was alive.”

Ryan whispered:

“Melissa…”

She stepped backward.

“You knew.”

Claire watched him.

Ryan finally nodded.

“Yes.”

Melissa laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“For how long?”

Ryan looked down.

“Since the funeral.”

Melissa’s face emptied.

Claire whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Melissa raised the phone again.

“Why did we bury an empty coffin?”

Daniel answered:

“It wasn’t empty.”

Melissa froze.

Ryan snapped:

“Dad.”

Daniel continued calmly.

“There was a body.”

Melissa’s hand trembled.

“Whose?”

Silence.

Ryan whispered:

“Don’t.”

Melissa looked at him.

“Whose body?”

Daniel said:

“A man who was already dead.”

Claire suddenly sat down.

Melissa stared at Ryan.

“This is insane.”

Daniel continued.

“I needed to disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because investigators were getting close.”

Melissa looked at Claire.

Claire whispered:

“The insurance network.”

Daniel laughed softly through the phone.

“Claire always was smarter than Ryan.”

Ryan clenched his jaw.

Melissa asked:

“So you started it?”

Daniel replied:

“No.”

“I built it.”

Melissa’s stomach turned.

Daniel explained it almost proudly.

He found struggling property owners.

Businesses with bad wiring.

Buildings with unpaid loans.

Properties one disaster away from collapse.

Then his network bought debt, insurance interests, or future claims at discounts.

Sometimes accidents happened naturally.

Sometimes they were “encouraged.”

Small water leaks.

Electrical failures.

Delayed alarms.

Broken pumps.

Never, according to Daniel, anything meant to kill anyone.

Melissa whispered:

“My sister’s restaurant.”

Daniel went silent.

Melissa repeated:

“My sister’s restaurant.”

Finally he said:

“That one went wrong.”

Melissa looked at Ryan.

Ryan’s eyes filled.

Melissa’s voice shook.

“Who planned it?”

Daniel answered:

“I did.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Melissa felt the world tilt.

“My sister almost died.”

Daniel replied:

“I know.”

“She spent nine months recovering.”

“I know.”

“She lost the business.”

“I know.”

“And my husband knew?”

Daniel paused.

Melissa stared at Ryan.

Daniel answered:

“He found out afterward.”

Ryan looked at her.

“That’s true.”

Melissa shouted:

“And then you protected him?”

Ryan said:

“He was my father.”

Melissa’s face changed.

“And she was my sister.”

Silence.

That sentence landed harder than anything else.

Claire stepped closer to Melissa.

“I can take all this to federal investigators.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“No.”

Claire looked at the phone.

Daniel continued:

“If those records leave that store, every person involved goes down.”

Claire said:

“Good.”

Daniel laughed.

“Including Melissa.”

Melissa froze.

“What?”

Ryan looked at the phone.

“Dad, stop.”

Daniel ignored him.

“Ask your husband why your name is on the oldest company.”

Melissa slowly turned.

“What company?”

Ryan said nothing.

Claire quickly searched the papers.

Then found it.

An incorporation document.

MELCAR RESTORATION LLC.

Founded fourteen years earlier.

Two months after Melissa and Ryan got married.

Registered owner:

Melissa Carter — 60%.

Ryan Carter — 40%.

Melissa stared.

“I’ve never seen this.”

Claire looked deeper.

Her face changed.

“This company received the settlement from your sister’s restaurant.”

Melissa stopped breathing.

“How much?”

Claire whispered:

“Two-point-two million dollars.”

Melissa grabbed the page.

The money had entered the company.

Then moved out within forty-eight hours.

Melissa looked at Ryan.

“You put the payout in a company under my name.”

Ryan whispered:

“I didn’t create it.”

Melissa stared.

“Then who did?”

Daniel answered through the phone:

“I did.”

Melissa’s voice became cold.

“You used me.”

Daniel replied:

“You had clean credit.”

“You were outside the business.”

“And no investigator would look twice at a newlywed school administrator.”

Claire looked at Melissa.

“They made you the legal owner.”

Melissa finally understood.

If the operation was exposed, she could look like the mastermind.

Her name.

Her ownership.

Her signature.

Her money trail.

Ryan had spent fourteen years sleeping beside a woman he knew could be blamed for his family’s crimes.

Melissa looked at him.

“Were you ever going to tell me?”

Ryan whispered:

“I was trying to fix it.”

“No.”

“You were trying to move the money.”

He said nothing.

Claire interrupted.

“There’s more.”

Melissa looked at her.

Claire held up yesterday’s transfer record.

The missing $480,000 had not gone overseas.

It had been transferred to a law firm.

Weston & Price.

Melissa frowned.

“Why send it to lawyers?”

Claire checked the reference line.

Then stopped.

“What?”

Claire looked at Ryan.

“It says settlement reserve.”

Melissa turned.

“What settlement?”

Ryan went pale.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Ryan.”

A warning.

Melissa heard it.

“Tell me.”

Ryan swallowed.

“Your sister filed a civil claim.”

Melissa stared.

“My sister?”

Ryan nodded.

“She reopened the restaurant fire case three months ago.”

Melissa felt cold.

“She never told me.”

Ryan whispered:

“She didn’t know whether she could trust you.”

That hurt more than she expected.

Melissa asked:

“Why?”

Ryan looked at the papers.

“Because your name is on everything.”

Melissa understood.

Her own sister believed she might have been involved.

Claire suddenly received a message.

She looked at her phone.

Then at Melissa.

“What?”

Claire turned the screen around.

Unknown sender.

One sentence:

DON’T LET RYAN LEAVE. POLICE ARE COMING FOR THE RIGHT PERSON THIS TIME.

Ryan saw it.

His face changed.

Melissa noticed.

“What did you do?”

Ryan backed away.

“Nothing.”

Claire said:

“Then why are you scared?”

Ryan looked toward the supermarket exit.

Melissa blocked him.

“No.”

He whispered:

“Move.”

“No.”

“Melissa.”

“You’re not leaving.”

Ryan’s voice cracked.

“You don’t understand.”

Melissa stared.

“Then make me understand.”

Ryan looked around.

Then finally said:

“The fire wasn’t the worst thing we covered up.”

Claire went still.

Melissa whispered:

“What was?”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“Six years ago, one of Dad’s buildings collapsed during renovation.”

Melissa remembered.

A warehouse downtown.

Three workers had been injured.

One disappeared afterward.

The newspapers said he had gone back to Mexico.

Ryan whispered:

“He didn’t leave.”

Melissa stared.

“Where is he?”

Ryan couldn’t answer.

Daniel snapped through the phone:

“Ryan, shut up.”

That was confirmation enough.

Melissa grabbed Ryan’s jacket.

“Where is he?”

Ryan’s voice dropped.

“In the building.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Ryan looked sick.

“He died during the collapse.”

Melissa released him.

“Then why wasn’t a body found?”

Ryan looked at his father’s name on the phone screen.

“Because Dad had the wall closed before inspectors arrived.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Melissa whispered:

“You buried a man inside a building?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I didn’t.”

“But you knew.”

“Yes.”

Daniel shouted:

“RYAN.”

Then the line went dead.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Claire finally whispered:

“That building is still standing.”

Ryan nodded.

Melissa asked:

“Who owns it now?”

Ryan looked directly at her.

“You do.”

Melissa went completely still.

“What?”

Ryan whispered:

“It’s one of the properties in MelCar Restoration.”

Melissa stared.

Her name.

Her company.

Her building.

Her buried victim.

Everything had been designed to end with her.

Then police lights flashed through the supermarket windows.

Claire looked outside.

“Three cars.”

Ryan suddenly reached for Melissa’s hand.

She pulled away.

He whispered:

“Listen to me. When they come in, do not say anything until you have a lawyer.”

Melissa stared.

“You’re worried about me now?”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“I’ve always been worried about you.”

She almost laughed.

Then the supermarket doors opened.

Four officers entered.

Behind them walked a woman.

Melissa froze.

Her sister, Amanda.

Scar still visible near her jaw from the restaurant fire.

Amanda looked at Melissa.

Then at Ryan.

Then at Claire.

She held a thick federal evidence folder.

Melissa whispered:

“Amanda?”

Her sister’s face was cold.

“I told them everything.”

Melissa’s eyes filled.

“You thought I was involved?”

Amanda didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“I did.”

Melissa looked devastated.

Amanda stepped closer.

“But three hours ago, I found the original incorporation file.”

She opened the folder.

Melissa stared at the signature page.

Her supposed signature was there.

Amanda pointed at it.

“That isn’t your signature.”

Melissa looked at her.

Amanda continued:

“And it isn’t Ryan’s handwriting either.”

Claire frowned.

“Then who forged it?”

Amanda looked past them.

Toward Janet, the cashier.

Melissa followed her eyes.

Janet had gone completely pale.

Amanda said:

“Ask her.”

Everyone turned.

Janet slowly backed away from the register.

Melissa stared.

“You?”

Janet shook her head.

“No.”

Amanda pulled out an old employee photograph.

Fourteen years earlier.

Daniel Carter’s insurance office.

Standing beside him—

a much younger Janet Lewis.

Melissa stopped breathing.

Amanda said:

“Janet wasn’t a cashier back then.”

Janet’s eyes filled with panic.

“She was Daniel Carter’s bookkeeper.”

Claire whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Melissa stepped toward Janet.

“You forged my signature?”

Janet whispered:

“I was told you agreed.”

Amanda shook her head.

“No.”

“You were paid forty thousand dollars to create the company.”

Janet looked toward the exit.

Two officers moved closer.

Then Janet said something none of them expected.

“Daniel didn’t pay me.”

Amanda froze.

“Who did?”

Janet looked at Ryan.

Ryan’s face changed.

Melissa slowly turned toward him.

Janet whispered:

“Ryan did.”

Silence.

Melissa stared at her husband.

Ryan’s eyes closed.

Amanda whispered:

“So you knew from the beginning.”

Ryan didn’t answer.

Melissa’s voice broke.

“Fourteen years?”

Ryan opened his eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Melissa slapped him.

Hard.

Then she whispered:

“From what?”

Ryan looked at Amanda.

Then Claire.

Then the police.

Finally, he looked at Melissa.

“From the reason my father chose you in the first place.”

Melissa froze.

“What reason?”

Ryan said:

“He didn’t pick your name because of your credit.”

Melissa stared.

“Then why?”

Ryan took a breath.

“Because your father helped him build the operation twenty-six years ago.”

Melissa’s face emptied.

“My father was a high school principal.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Melissa backed away.

Ryan continued:

“That’s what your family was told after he disappeared.”

Melissa whispered:

“My father didn’t disappear.”

“He died.”

Ryan looked at Amanda.

Amanda’s face had gone pale too.

Ryan said:

“No.”

“He’s alive.”

Melissa stared at him.

Ryan continued:

“And Daniel isn’t the person running this anymore.”

Melissa could barely speak.

“Who is?”

Ryan looked at the supermarket entrance.

A black sedan had just stopped outside.

An elderly man stepped out.

Melissa stared through the glass.

Her handbag slipped from her hand.

Amanda whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

The man looked exactly like the father they had buried twenty-one years earlier.

He walked toward the doors.

Ryan whispered:

“That’s who emptied the account.”
