“Mom, I swear I feel so embarrassed just walking down the street with her! Did you see how awkward she looks when she takes a step, with those short, crooked legs of hers, yet she still expects me to act proud of having her as my future wife?”
Hannah Campbell froze completely still inside the fitting room of an upscale bridal boutique in downtown Nashville. She recognized that sharp voice instantly, knowing without a doubt that it belonged to Shawn, the fiancé of her younger sister Paige.
The wedding ceremony was scheduled to take place in just four short weeks. Hannah had stepped inside only to pick out an elegant dress for the celebration, never imagining she would stumble upon something that could shatter her sister’s entire world.
“Keep your voice down right now, honey,” warned Brenda, Shawn’s mother, whispering sharply from the adjacent lounge area. “We cannot afford to let any strangers or salesclerks hear what you are saying.”
“I am dead serious because I do not love her at all, Mom! Whenever she leans in to kiss me, I literally have to shut my eyes and force a smile, wondering how I will survive a lifetime next to someone who barely reaches my shoulder.”
Hannah felt her fingers trembling violently against the fabric of the dress in her hands. Paige was twenty-nine years old, and ever since she was a little girl, cruel classmates had teased her about her petite height and a mild childhood bone condition that gave her a slight limp.
Over the years, Paige had learned to accept her body, even though she still felt too self-conscious to wear short skirts out in public. Shawn had always known about that deep insecurity, spending almost two years assuring her that she was the most gorgeous woman alive.
Now, standing on the other side of a thin wall, Hannah was finally discovering his true, sickening thoughts.
“Stop being foolish and look at the bigger picture, Shawn,” Brenda continued with an icy tone. “Have you completely forgotten who her father is, considering Thomas Campbell owns a multi-million-dollar building supply firm called Summit Materials?”
“I know who he is, but I am totally sick and tired of taking orders from Lucas every single morning,” Shawn complained loudly. “I have spent three straight months writing boring reports like some common entry-level clerk.”
Lucas was the older brother of Hannah and Paige, currently managing commercial sales for the family empire.
“Just hold your tongue a little bit longer,” Brenda advised him calmly. “Once you sign that marriage certificate, our whole family can demand our rightful piece of that fortune.”
“Are you sure Thomas will actually hand over executive seats?” Shawn asked skeptically.
“Of course he will, because family comes first to people like him,” Brenda answered with absolute confidence. “Your brother Brett desperately needs a lucrative director title, and your sister Tara could easily run a major corporate department.”
“Wait, Tara works behind a hair styling chair at a strip-mall salon!” Shawn blurted out.
“She will figure out how to manage an office soon enough, because the only thing that matters is our family securing this golden ticket before someone else does.”
Hannah quietly pulled her phone from her purse and hit the record button. The terrible secrets kept pouring out without pause, growing darker with every passing breath.
“What happens if Paige refuses to quit her own job after we tie the knot?” Shawn asked.
“You get her pregnant as soon as possible so she stays trapped at home tending to a baby while you run the corporate board,” Brenda suggested with a small, cruel giggle.
“I honestly do not even know if I can stand the thought of having children with her,” Shawn grumbled.
“Secure the firm, the money, and the title first, my dear boy,” Brenda instructed him softly. “After that, you can discreetly find one of those tall, gorgeous blondes you always lust after, just as long as your little wife never catches you.”
Hannah clutched her hand over her mouth to keep her frantic sobs from escaping. Then, another piece of casual scheming reached her ears, turning her stomach inside out.
“By the way, Mom, this custom tuxedo costs nine hundred dollars,” Shawn mentioned casually. “Do you think Paige will cover half the bill for me?”
“Without a doubt, so just tell her you want to look extra handsome exclusively for her eyes,” Brenda chuckled. “That naive girl melts and hands over her cash whenever you whisper sweet compliments.”
“You are completely right about that,” Shawn laughed smugly. “Flattery is the exact reason her father hired me in the first place.”
The pair shared a hearty laugh before their footsteps faded away toward the boutique entrance. Hannah emerged from the stall with tear-stained cheeks and more than ten uninterrupted minutes of crystal-clear audio saved on her device.
She dialed her sister immediately, her heart thumping against her ribs.
“Paige, please drop whatever you are doing and drive over to Mom and Dad’s house right away,” Hannah urged.
“Did something terrible happen to the family?” Paige asked with rising panic.
“This is strictly about Shawn,” Hannah answered solemnly.
A heavy, suffocating silence hung between the two ends of the line.
“Did he make another cruel comment about my legs?” Paige whispered so faintly that Hannah felt her spirit crumble into dust.
Hannah stopped breathing for a brief second, realizing with sudden horror that the emotional abuse had begun long before today. The evidence on her phone proved that Shawn was not merely playing with Paige’s gentle heart, but actively plotting to steal her entire family’s legacy.
PART 2
When Paige stepped through the front door of her parents’ home, Hannah was already sitting in the living room alongside Thomas and Nancy.
“Why does everyone look so serious?” Paige asked nervously while setting down her keys. “Shawn just texted me saying he found the perfect suit for our ceremony.”
Hannah placed her phone onto the wooden coffee table between them.
“Before you listen to this, I need you to remember that nothing this man says can ever diminish your true worth,” Hannah spoke softly.
Hannah pressed play, and Shawn’s harsh voice filled the quiet room.
Paige grew ghostly pale as the recording echoed Shawn’s disgust regarding her body and limp. Across from them, Thomas tightened his weathered hands into white-knuckled fists as Brenda began divvying up company positions for her other children.
When Shawn openly admitted that he felt no love for Paige, and Brenda suggested finding a tall mistress on the side, Paige broke down into violent sobs.
“I trusted every word he told me,” Paige wept into her hands. “He always claimed my legs were precious because they were the exact steps that brought me into his life.”
Nancy wrapped her arms tightly around her trembling daughter.
“That vile man never deserved a single second of your devotion, my sweet girl,” Nancy comforted her tenderly.
“He used to tell me that I looked like a clumsy child standing beside him,” Paige confessed through tears. “He forced me to wear painful high heels for every photo, and whenever my ankles ached, he told me I was overly sensitive.”
Thomas rose from his armchair with fury blazing in his eyes.
“I am driving over to the office to fire that leech before breakfast tomorrow!” Thomas bellowed.
“Dad, please do not act out of raw anger,” Hannah pleaded gently. “We need to handle this with a clear head so he cannot twist the narrative against us.”
Just then, Lucas arrived from work, and after listening to the audio, he dropped an unexpected truth onto the table.
“Shawn is actually an embarrassingly poor worker,” Lucas revealed with a heavy sigh. “He constantly shows up late, turns in sloppy paperwork, and manipulates his desk mates into completing his daily workload.”
“Why on earth did you keep him on the payroll all this time?” Thomas asked sternly.
“Because he was Paige’s fiancé, so all of us cut him endless slack out of love for her,” Lucas admitted with downcast eyes.
“I never wanted anyone at the office to lose their livelihood because of me,” Paige murmured softly.
“This is not about cruel revenge,” Lucas countered calmly. “From this moment forward, we simply strip away his unearned privileges and hold him strictly accountable like every other staff member.”
Paige wiped her wet face and made a firm resolution. She refused to confront Shawn directly just yet, choosing instead to quietly unwind the wedding plans and recover every possible deposit.
She called Shawn later that evening, telling him that she needed to stay with her parents to assist Nancy through a sudden round of physical therapy.
“Postpone our wedding date?” Shawn barked over the speaker. “You are being utterly ridiculous, especially when your wealthy father can easily afford a private home nurse!”
“I want to take personal care of my mother myself, Shawn,” Paige insisted quietly.
“Fine, but you better use this time to convince your dad to promote me to regional director before we walk down the aisle,” Shawn ordered bluntly.
Paige closed her eyes in disbelief, noticing that he had not uttered a single word asking about Nancy’s actual health.
During the subsequent weeks, Shawn discovered that working without family protection was an exhausting nightmare. On his very first Monday under the new rules, he strolled into the office forty minutes late, prompting Lucas to hand him an official written reprimand.
A few days later, Shawn arrived late once more and received a formal disciplinary warning in full accordance with corporate guidelines.
“People never used to scrutinize my hours like this,” Shawn complained loudly to a coworker in the breakroom.
“That was because we were quietly doing your job for you,” the coworker replied bluntly. “Now you actually have to pull your own weight around here.”
Meanwhile, Brenda kept piling intense pressure onto his shoulders at home. Brett had already bragged to his friends that he would soon sit in an executive suite, while Tara was visiting dealerships looking at luxury vehicles she assumed Summit Materials would finance.
“You cannot sit back and let that snobbish family slam the golden gates in our faces!” Brenda shouted in their kitchen.
Shawn felt desperation clawing at his throat, knowing his employment was hanging by a thread. He convinced himself that pulling off a massive victory was the only way to demand a promotion from Thomas Campbell.
Summit Materials was currently bidding on a multi-million-dollar deal with a large commercial builder based out of Memphis. If Shawn could magically deliver that contract, he believed Thomas would have no choice but to elevate him to management.
The technical files required an extensive engineering review before submission, but Shawn refused to wait. Late on Sunday night, he opened an obsolete template, haphazardly edited several price figures, and emailed the file directly to the client as an authorized proposal.
He smiled arrogantly when his inbox dinged with a delivery confirmation. What Shawn failed to realize was that he had attached material ratings created for a low-grade residential project, entirely incompatible with heavy industrial standards.
When Monday morning arrived, an explosive telephone call from Memphis rocked the executive suite, beginning the swift collapse of the fraudulent future Shawn had manufactured.
PART 3
“Your representative just sent over a binding proposal with materials that fail our safety tolerances entirely!” the Memphis contractor roared over the speaker. “We are constructing an industrial hub, so is this how Summit Materials conducts business?”
Lucas pulled up the emailed document instantly, feeling a chill run through his veins. The client required reinforced grade-eight structural steel, yet Shawn had submitted a quote for lightweight residential framing that could never support the building load.
This was not a minor clerical typo; if accepted, it could have bound the firm to deliver catastrophically defective supplies.
“Dad, we have a critical emergency,” Lucas said after rushing into Thomas’s office. “Shawn sent out an unapproved bid behind our backs.”
Thomas examined the printed pages with a cold, piercing gaze and immediately summoned the technical team. An hour later, Shawn walked into the office with a boastful grin stretching across his face.
“Good morning, gentlemen!” Shawn announced cheerfully. “I assume you saw how I took the initiative to wrap up the Memphis negotiation.”
Lucas slapped the proposal firmly onto the mahogany desk.
“Who authorized you to dispatch this document to an outside client?” Lucas asked sternly.
Shawn glanced at the sheets with mild annoyance.
“I sent it myself because the client wanted immediate answers, so I did them a favor,” Shawn replied casually.
“Did you cross-reference the engineering specifications before pressing send?” Lucas pressed.
“There was no need because those construction bids are practically identical every single time,” Shawn answered flippantly.
