Whatever she saw in his hand… wasn’t money.
It wasn’t food.
It was a small worn photograph.
Her mother.
Younger. Smiling. Standing right next to the man in the suit.
The girl’s voice broke:

The man didn’t answer right away.
He just looked at the baby in her arms.

The clerk froze.
