My name is Sarah. Mark and I have been married for six years, and I’d spent eight months planning our first big family vacation. I booked the hotel, saved for the flights, and planned things our three kids would love. Mark mostly just asked how much everything cost.
I should’ve expected it. On one of our first trips together, Mark upgraded himself to first class without telling me and left me in economy because he “needed to decompress.”
That was Mark. He needed quiet after work, weekends to recharge, and space whenever life became too much. And I was always the one making sure he got it—while no one ever seemed to wonder when I got a break.
That’s why I’d put so much into this vacation. For once, I wanted us to enjoy something together as a family.
We’d barely picked up our bags in Florida when Mark casually said,
“By the way, the guys are staying about an hour from here.”
I looked at him.
“What guys?”
“Jason and a few college buddies. I’m gonna stay with them for three days. Golf, fishing, you know.”
I stared at him.
“You already planned this?”
He shrugged.
“Come on, Sarah. It’s three days. You’ll have the resort. The kids will have the pool. You’ll be fine.”
*You’ll be fine.* I’d spent eight months making sure everyone would be fine. No one had stopped to ask what I wanted.
But for once, I didn’t argue. I smiled…
“Have fun.”
The next morning, Mark grabbed his bag, kissed the kids, and drove away. I watched his car disappear from the hotel balcony.
Then I picked up my phone and made one call. By noon, our suitcases were packed.
“Mom,” my 5-year-old asked, “are we going home?”
I looked at my three kids.
“No, sweetheart. We’re finally going on vacation.”
Three days later, Mark called. The moment I answered, I knew he’d discovered what I’d done.
“Sarah…” His voice cracked. “Please tell me you didn’t.”
I didn’t answer. Then I heard something I’d never heard from Mark before.
He was crying.
