PART 2 — THE WOMAN LOOKED PAST THE GROOM AND POINTED AT SOMEONE IN THE WEDDING CROWD

The groom could barely speak.

“If you’re my mother… why did you leave me?”

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t.”

A voice suddenly came from behind the guests.

“That’s enough.”

The groom turned.

His father was standing beside the church doors, his face completely drained of color.

The woman reached inside her old coat and pulled out a yellowed envelope.

“Your father told you I died after the accident,” she said. “But I woke up three weeks later.”

The groom stared at his father.

“What is she talking about?”

His father said nothing.

So the woman handed the groom the envelope.

Inside was an old legal agreement.

At the bottom was his father’s signature.

And beside it—

a payment of $250,000.

The groom’s hands began shaking.

The woman whispered:

“He paid me to disappear from your life. He threatened to make sure I never saw you again if I refused.”

The bride covered her mouth.

Guests began whispering.

But then the groom noticed another signature on the document.

His eyes narrowed.

“Who is Evelyn Carter?”

The woman slowly looked at the bride.

Nobody moved.

The bride’s face suddenly went pale.

“My mother,” she whispered.

The groom stared at his new wife.

The woman nodded through her tears.

“Her mother helped your father arrange everything.”

The groom took a step away from his bride.

“You knew?”

“No!” she cried. “I swear I didn’t!”

But before anyone could respond, the bride’s mother pushed through the crowd.

“Don’t believe her!”

The homeless woman smiled bitterly.

Then she pulled one final photograph from the envelope.

It showed the groom’s father…

and the bride’s mother…

kissing outside the hospital the very night his mother supposedly “died.”

The groom looked at his father.

Then at his bride’s mother.

And finally at his new wife.

His wedding ring slipped from his fingers and hit the church steps.

Because in less than five minutes, he had discovered his mother was alive—

his father had built his childhood on a lie—

and the family he had just married into had been part of the secret for 27 years.
