Vanessa stopped breathing.
The boy looked about sixteen.
He wore a cheap black suit, but his face was unmistakable.
Richard stared at him.
The same eyes.
The same jawline.
Even Richard’s father looked terrified.
Vanessa whispered:
“Ethan… you weren’t supposed to come here.”
Richard slowly turned toward his bride.
“You know him?”
The boy walked down the aisle.
“I know her better than anyone.”
He looked directly at Richard.
“She’s my mother.”
The entire church erupted.
Vanessa grabbed Richard’s arm.
“Please, let me explain.”
But Ethan pulled a folded document from his jacket.
“She told everyone my father abandoned us.”
Richard took the paper.
It was another DNA test.
His face hardened.
“This says my father is your father.”
Silence.
Richard looked toward the front row.
His father, Charles Hale, slowly stood.
Richard’s voice cracked.
“Dad?”
Vanessa screamed:
“Don’t believe him!”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Then ask him why he paid for my school for sixteen years.”
Charles lowered his eyes.
Richard’s mother stared at her husband.
“You had a child with the woman our son was about to marry?”
Vanessa burst into tears.
“That’s not what happened!”
Richard stepped backward from her.
“Then tell me what happened.”
Vanessa looked at Charles.
Charles looked at Vanessa.
Neither spoke.
Then Sophie suddenly pointed toward the bride’s purse.
“She has another phone.”
Vanessa lunged for it.
Emily reached it first.
She unlocked the screen.
There were dozens of messages between Vanessa and Charles.
The final message had been sent that morning:
“Once Richard signs the marriage papers, the company becomes ours.”
Richard stared at both of them.
“You planned this together?”
Charles shouted:
“Richard, listen to me!”
But Richard ripped the marriage documents in half.
“You’re both finished.”
Then Ethan quietly said:
“No. They’re not.”
He pulled one final envelope from his pocket.
Vanessa started shaking.
“Ethan… don’t.”
He handed it to Richard.
Inside was a hospital birth certificate.
Richard read the mother’s name.
Vanessa Hale.
Then he read the father’s name.
His face went completely blank.
Because the name wasn’t Charles.
It wasn’t Richard.
It belonged to someone standing inside the cathedral at that exact moment.
Richard slowly raised his eyes.
And the man in the back row immediately turned and ran.
