Part 2 : Claire stared at Sophia as if the dead had just stepped out of a grave.

“You took my child?”

Sophia’s face collapsed.

“No. Dad did.”

Claire turned toward her former fiancé, Daniel.

He looked twenty years older, but she recognized him instantly.

“You knew?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I found out too late.”

Claire’s voice shook.

“Found out what?”

Sophia stepped closer.

“The baby survived your crash.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Her father had stood beside her hospital bed and told her the baby was gone.

She had believed him for twenty-two years.

Sophia continued.

“Dad paid the doctor to change the records. Then he arranged for your son to disappear.”

Claire stared at Eli.

“But you said Eli isn’t my son.”

“He isn’t.”

Sophia reached into the leather satchel and pulled out another photograph.

A young man stood outside a university building.

He had Claire’s eyes.

Her exact eyes.

Claire almost dropped the photograph.

“Who is he?”

“His name is Noah.”

Sophia’s voice cracked.

“He’s twenty-one.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“My son?”

Sophia nodded.

“He found out the truth three months ago.”

“Where is he?”

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

“He disappeared last Friday.”

Claire looked from one face to another.

“Why?”

Sophia glanced toward the black sedan.

“Because he confronted your father.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

“My father is eighty years old.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That doesn’t make him harmless.”

Suddenly Eli grabbed Claire’s sleeve.

“He gave me something for you.”

The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny memory card.

Claire stared at it.

“What’s on that?”

Eli whispered:

“Noah said if he didn’t come back, you had to watch it.”

Claire inserted the card into Daniel’s phone.

A video appeared.

Noah was sitting in a dark room.

Bruised.

Terrified.

He looked straight into the camera.

“Mom, if you’re watching this, I finally found out why Grandpa separated us.”

Claire began crying.

Then Noah said the sentence that silenced everyone.

“He didn’t steal me because of money.”

A door slammed somewhere behind him.

Noah looked over his shoulder.

Then back at the camera.

“He stole me because I saw what he did to Grandma.”

The video ended.

Claire stared at Sophia.

“Our mother died of cancer.”

Sophia slowly shook her head.

“No, Claire.”

Across the street, the black sedan’s engine suddenly started.

Sophia grabbed Claire’s arm.

“That’s the lie that started all of this.”

And then Claire saw who was sitting behind the wheel.

Her father.

Watching them.

Smiling.
