Then a third time.
His hands began to shake.
“Daniel, Claire didn’t pay me to leave town. She paid me to hide the truth about the little girl standing in front of you. Her name is Lily… and she is your daughter.”
Daniel looked at the child.
For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.
“That’s impossible…”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“My mom said you never knew about me.”
Daniel slowly turned toward Claire.
She backed away.
“Daniel, please. Not here.”
But the ballroom doors had already opened.
His parents, business partners, friends—and nearly two hundred guests—were staring into the lobby.
Daniel held up the bank receipt.
“Why did you send Lily’s mother $250,000?”
Claire’s lips trembled.
“She was blackmailing us.”
“Us?”
Daniel froze.
Then his father stepped out of the crowd.
“Son… give me the envelope.”
Daniel stared at him.
That was when he noticed the second photograph.
It showed Claire standing outside a private clinic eleven years earlier.
Beside her was Daniel’s father.
And Lily’s mother.
On the back of the photograph someone had written:
“They all knew.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You knew I had a daughter?”
His father said nothing.
Claire began crying.
“We were protecting you.”
“From my own child?”
Then Lily whispered:
“My mom said there was one more secret.”
Everyone turned toward her.
She reached into her backpack and pulled out a small USB drive.
“She told me if they lied about me… you should watch the video.”
Claire suddenly screamed:
“DON’T PLAY THAT!”
Daniel looked at the USB drive.
Then at Claire.
And for the first time that night, his father looked genuinely terrified.
Daniel walked toward the ballroom’s giant presentation screen.
“If everyone knew except me…”
He inserted the drive.
“…then everyone can watch it with me.”
The screen turned black.
A woman appeared on the recording.
Lily whispered:
“That’s my mom.”
The woman looked directly into the camera and said:
“Daniel, if you’re watching this, Claire has already lied about Lily. But Lily isn’t the secret they’re most afraid of.”
Claire collapsed into a chair.
