The man’s hand began to shake violently.
Man (whispering, shocked):
“No… that blanket…”
His breathing became uneven. His face went pale.
The woman in gold leaned closer, suddenly alarmed.
Woman in Gold:
“What is it? What are you seeing?”
But the man couldn’t answer.
The waitress stood still, tears now running down her face.
Waitress (softly):
“My mother kept this photo for twenty-two years.”
The room went completely silent. No forks. No voices. Nothing.
The man slowly looked up at her.
Man (broken voice):
“Who are you…?”
She took a breath that shook her whole body.
Waitress:
“My mother said you deserved the truth.”
A long pause. The air felt heavier than ever.
Then she spoke the words that shattered everything.
Waitress (whisper):
“She told me… your wife paid to bury an empty coffin.”
The woman in gold staggered back, grabbing the table for support.
Gasps spread across the room.
The man stared at the photo, unable to breathe.
And for the first time in that perfect luxury room…
everything fell apart.
