He grabbed the brass key from the desk and told Eli to stay beside his grandfather while he ran toward the basement door.
But before he could reach it, Susan stepped in front of him.
“Marcus, please,” she said, her voice shaking. “You do not understand.”
Marcus stared at her in disbelief.
“My father was locked inside a wall.”
Susan’s lips parted, but no words came out.
From the living room, Arthur forced out a few broken words:
“They wanted… my signature…”
The entire house went silent.
Marcus slowly turned back toward his sister.
“For what?”
Susan burst into tears.
But Vincent answered for her.
“For the company,” he said coldly from the hallway. “For the accounts. For everything your father was going to leave behind.”
Marcus lunged at him, but Vincent stepped back and pulled something from his pocket.
Not a weapon.
A small key fob.
Suddenly, the basement door behind Marcus clicked open by itself.
Arthur’s voice trembled from the other room.
“The cellar… now…”
Marcus rushed downstairs and shoved open the wine cellar door.
Inside, hidden behind shelves of expensive bottles, was a steel lockbox.
The brass key fit perfectly.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside were signed documents, bank statements, property deeds, and a voice recorder.
Marcus pressed play.
Arthur’s weak voice filled the cellar.
“If you are hearing this, Susan and Vincent tried to force me to sign everything over. When I refused, they said no one would believe an old man losing his mind…”

“Keep him downstairs until he signs.”

Upstairs, Eli suddenly screamed:
“Dad!”

Susan had collapsed into a chair, sobbing.
