“He told me my real father was dead.”
Cole’s face changed.
The wealthy man stepped backward.
“She’s confused.”
“No,” Nora whispered. “You said my father died before I was born.”
Cole moved toward him.
“How do you know when she was born?”
The man said nothing.
Cole’s eyes narrowed.
Nora suddenly reached inside her coat and pulled out an old photograph.
“My mother gave me this before she died.”
Cole took it.
His hands began shaking.
The photograph showed Sarah holding a newborn baby.
Standing beside her was Cole.
But someone else was visible in the background.
A much younger version of Nora’s husband.
Cole looked up.
“You knew Sarah.”
The man’s face went pale.
Nora stared at her husband.
“What did you do to my mother?”
He tried to leave.
Cole blocked the door.
Then the man finally snapped.
“Your mother was supposed to disappear forever!”
Nora gasped.
Cole grabbed his shirt.
“What did you say?”
The man laughed nervously.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
He pointed at Nora.
“Sarah didn’t run away from you.”
Cole froze.
“She was paid to leave.”
“By who?”
The man smiled.
“Your own brother.”
Cole’s face went blank.
Because his brother had been the one person who helped him search for Sarah for twenty-three years.
And when Cole called him from the diner…
A woman answered his brother’s phone.
Cole recognized her voice immediately.
It was Sarah.
And she was very much alive.
