“Rachel, if you’re reading this, Daniel has already lied to you.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Give me that.”
Rachel stepped away.
The letter continued.
The woman in the photograph was named Claire.
Years earlier, Claire had worked for Daniel’s company.
But according to the letter, their relationship had not ended when Daniel claimed it did.
Claire wrote that she had discovered Daniel had secretly transferred millions through accounts registered under other people’s names.
When she threatened to expose him, she suddenly lost her job.
Then she disappeared from everyone who knew her.
Rachel stared at Daniel.
“You told me she moved overseas.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“She did.”
Noah interrupted.
“No, she didn’t.”
Everyone turned toward him.
He pulled a tiny voice recorder from his pocket.
“My mom gave me this last week.”
Daniel rushed forward.
Rachel stepped between them.
“What’s on it?”
Noah pressed PLAY.
Claire’s frightened voice filled the ballroom.
“Rachel, if anything happens to me, ask Daniel what happened at Lake Mercer on October 14th.”
Rachel froze.
October 14th.
Their wedding anniversary.
She looked slowly at Daniel.
“That night… you told me you were in London.”
Daniel whispered:
“Rachel, turn that recorder off.”
But the recording continued.
Then another voice appeared.
Daniel’s voice.
Clear.
Angry.
And saying something Rachel would never be able to forget.
The entire ballroom heard it.
Rachel dropped the recorder.
Police sirens suddenly sounded outside.
Daniel turned toward the doors.
Noah looked at Rachel and whispered:
“My mom told them everything.”
And when the ballroom doors opened, Rachel finally understood why Daniel had been trying so desperately to keep that envelope away from her.
