My MIL was the first person to hold my newborn — then my husband took the baby from her and said, “You need to leave.”
I had imagined the moment my husband first held our daughter a hundred times.
But by the time she was born, Daniel still wasn’t there.
He’d called to say he was on his way.
That was hours ago.
So when the hospital door finally opened, I thought, *Finally.*
But it wasn’t my husband.
It was his mother.
“Where’s Daniel?” Margaret asked.
“I wish I knew.”
Her expression shifted for just a second, but then she came over to the bed.
“Oh, look at her.”
When the nurse brought my daughter over, Margaret immediately held out her arms.
“Can I?”
I was too tired to argue.
So my MIL became the first person in Daniel’s family to hold our baby.
She gazed down at her granddaughter with tears in her eyes.
“Hello, little Grace.”
I frowned.
“Grace?”
Margaret smiled.
“It suits her, don’t you think?”
“We haven’t chosen a name yet.”
“I know.
It’s only a suggestion.”
Something about the way she said it bothered me.
Then the door suddenly flew open.
Daniel.
Relief hit me first.
Then anger.
“Where the hell have you been?”
But he wasn’t looking at me.
He was staring at his mother holding our daughter.
“Mom, give me the baby.”
Margaret stiffened.
“Daniel, you just got here.”
“Give her to me.”
“She’s my granddaughter.”
“And she’s my daughter.
Give her to me.
Now.”
The room went completely silent.
Margaret finally handed him the baby.
I stared at my husband.
“What the hell is going on?”
He didn’t answer me.
He looked straight at his mother.

“I talked to the nurse in the hallway.”
Margaret went pale.
“Oh, for God’s sake.”
“She told me everything.”
“Daniel—”
“No. I told you this wasn’t happening.”
I pushed myself up in bed.
“Can somebody please tell me what you’re talking about?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Grace isn’t just some name my mother likes.”
“Then what is it?”
Daniel hesitated.
“It was Rebecca’s middle name.”
I stared at him.
Rebecca.
His ex-wife.
I slowly turned toward Margaret.
“You wanted to name my daughter after his ex-wife?”
“It’s not like that,” Margaret snapped. “Grace has always meant something to our family.”
“I told you no,” Daniel said. “Months ago.”
I looked at him.
“Months?”
He finally met my eyes.
“You knew about this for months?”
“I handled it. Or I thought I did.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
They’d been arguing about my daughter’s name while I didn’t even know the conversation existed.
Margaret folded her arms.
“I was only trying to—”
Daniel let out a bitter laugh.
“Tell her the rest.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“Daniel.”
“Go ahead, Mom.”
She said nothing.
Daniel looked at me.
“The nurse told me what else she asked her to do.”
My stomach dropped.
“What did she ask her to do?”
“She misunderstood,” Margaret said quickly.
“No, she didn’t.”
A knock interrupted us.
The nurse stepped inside with several papers in her hand.
She saw Margaret. Then Daniel. And stopped.
“I… didn’t realize everyone was still here.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Perfect. Maybe you can explain it.”
I looked between them.
“Explain what?”
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“I thought it was something you and your husband had already agreed to.”
“Agreed to what?”
The nurse looked at Daniel.
“I thought you both knew another visitor was coming.”
I frowned.
“What visitor?”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Tell her who you invited.”
Margaret said nothing.
The nurse glanced toward the hallway.
Then her face changed.
“Oh, no!”
