PART 2 ; The girl tugged gently on Mara’s dress.

“Dad said you’d be angry when you learned about Mom.”

Mara slowly looked down.

“Your… mother?”

Before the child could answer, the glass doors opened.

Thomas walked inside.

Five years older. Completely alive.

Mara slapped him so hard the entire ballroom went silent.

“I BURIED YOU!”

Thomas didn’t fight back.

Instead, he pulled a sealed envelope from his jacket and placed it on the table.

“I had to disappear.”

“You had to abandon your wife?”

His eyes shifted toward the little girl.

Then toward a beautiful woman standing among the guests.

Mara recognized her instantly.

Her own younger sister, Claire.

Mara stopped breathing.

Claire began crying.

Thomas finally said the words that destroyed what was left of Mara’s family.

“Claire isn’t her mother.”

Mara stared at him.

“Then who is?”

Thomas opened the envelope.

Inside was a DNA report.

He slid it toward Mara.

The little girl looked up at her and whispered:

“You are.”

Mara laughed in disbelief.

“That’s impossible. I’ve never had a child.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“You did.”

The ballroom became completely silent.

Then he added:

“Your family told you she died at birth.”

Mara slowly turned toward her mother across the room.

Her mother dropped her champagne glass.

And that was when Mara understood why Thomas had vanished five years earlier.

He hadn’t been hiding from Mara.

He had been hiding the daughter her own family had stolen from her.
