“What does that mean?”
The boy looked toward the street as if he wanted to run.
“You knew her mother.”
The old man’s face changed instantly.
“No.”
The boy reached into his torn jacket and placed an old photograph on the table.
The millionaire stopped breathing.
Twenty years earlier, the woman in that photograph had been his housekeeper.
She had disappeared after accusing his business partner of something so serious that the old man had paid her to stay silent.
But she had not disappeared.
She had been pregnant.
The old man looked at the baby.
Then at the boy.
“Who is her father?”
The boy’s eyes filled with tears.
“You are.”
A woman at the next table gasped.
The millionaire shook his head violently.
“That’s impossible.”
The boy slid a folded hospital document across the table.
The old man opened it.
His hands began shaking.
The DNA test listed one name under biological father.
His.
Before he could speak, the baby touched his hand again.
This time, his entire leg moved.
The millionaire pushed against the table.
Slowly—painfully—he rose from his wheelchair.
People screamed.
Phones came out.
But the boy wasn’t watching the miracle.
He was staring across the street.
A black car had just stopped.
Two men stepped out.
The boy grabbed the baby and whispered:
“They found us.”
And when the millionaire saw who was getting out of the car, he finally understood why the children had been hiding for months.
