Part 2: He imagined her face the entire way home.Every mile.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The soldier didn’t look at them anymore.

Only the stairs.

Slow.
Heavy.
Final.

Each step echoed like a countdown.

Behind him—

“Please… don’t go up there…”

Too late.

The door creaked open.

A small room.
Dim light.

And there—

A little girl, half-asleep, holding a blanket… staring at him like she wasn’t sure if he was real.

“…Daddy?”

That word—

Destroyed everything.

He dropped to his knees.

The rabbit slipped from his hand.

She ran into his arms.

And for the first time—

He broke.

Tears.
Silent.
Uncontrollable.

Behind him, in the doorway—

The wife collapsed, crying.

Because the truth was worse than cheating.

It wasn’t just betrayal.

It was hiding him.

Erasing him.

Turning him into a stranger in his own home.

The little girl whispered:

“Mommy said you weren’t coming back…”

The soldier closed his eyes.

Held her tighter.

And said one line—

Low.
Shaking.
Final:

“I never left.”

CUT.
